~serving on the City of St. Augustine Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB), the St. Johns County Historic Resource Review Board (HRRB) and the State of Florida Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board.
~building awareness of the economic and social benefits of historic preservation at the local, state and national levels,
~working on social and human service projects of the Junior Service League,
~establishing the Lighthouse and Museum, and the Lighthouse Archeological Maritime Program,
~improving my neighborhood in the St. Augustine North Davis Shores Neighborhood Association, as well as working to improve the quality of life in all of our City’s neighborhoods.
~volunteering in the classrooms of public schools
~volunteering to support sports and other healthful activities of the city’s children
~serving in the church in which I and my family and I are members of (Anastasia Baptist Church) by teaching Vacation Bible School for the last three years, working on the building fund and serving on the Core Mission and Values Advisory Committee
MY PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING is in urban planning, geo-demographic research, market and feasibility analysis. I hold a B.A. from the University of Florida with a major in Geography.
I fell in love with St. Augustine after spending a summer internship in the City Planning Department and moved here in 1984, after college graduation. Since then, I have put my knowledge and expertise to work on the betterment of our changing city through active involvement in many community boards and committees (see my resume on the home page of my website).
MY MOTIVE TO SERVE has always been my love and passion for this historic city and the people in it. St. Augustine is one of the greatest small towns in America. My family, the Middleton family, have been in St. Johns County for five generations. My great grandfather, Stephen C. Middleton, was the County Tax Collector, who raised his family on Washington Street, in Lincolnville, including my mentor, role model and late mother, Dr. Sue Middleton, who dedicated her life to helping people as community psychologist. So when I say my motive to serve comes from a heartfelt love and a passion to serve the city I love, it’s easy to understand that it’s in my lifeblood.
YOU CAN IDENTIFY WITH ME because I live, work and serve here. For the last 12 years I have lived in a modest home in Davis Shores with my husband, Roger. We have two sons, Jacob and Luke. As a family we stay involved in our public schools, church and sports activities. My family and I walk the same walk in everyday life as everyone else and we understand what people are going through. My husband and I work hard for every dollar we have earned, and we expect a dollar’s worth of service for a dollar’s worth of taxes. And we care about a bright future for our city.
ONE OF OUR GREATEST CHALLENGES AHEAD will be to keep balance between maintaining economic vitality for businesses, protecting livability for residents, preserving our history and culture for ourselves, our children, and millions of visitors.
In St. Augustine we have a vibrant culture, a unique history and special people. As our city changes, I believe our city government must adjust, keep pace and modernize. This will take leadership with vision, understanding and respect of who we are now and where we are going…
As your City Commissioner, I will commit myself to:
~ work hard for the kind of government that is open and accountable so we can feel confident in knowing that government is fair and equitable to all.
~ work to increase efficiency and self-evaluation in city operations — to hold the line on taxes.
~ protect and preserve our historic resources and build appreciation of our diverse culture and history for a strong future.
~ continue to work on traffic and parking issues so that we have increased mobility and convenient and access to all areas of the city.
AS YOU REVIEW MY CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS, you will see a wide cross section of supporters.
You will see artists and activists, homemakers, residents, retirees, businessmen and businesswomen — every walk of life is represented in my support.
This is because in all my years of being active, if I have learned anything from past successes, it’s to listen to those with differing interests and work for what is fair for ALL of us.
As your City Commissioner … you can expect me to listen, do my home work, and be fair to ALL.
Please VOTE for me, NANCY SIKES-KLINE on November 4.
